Where?

NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent PCT leads on commissioning for learning disability services for both east and west Kent. They work closely with Kent County Council.
For more information about West Kent click here.

The PCT covers a wide area in the east of the county of Kent, with a sea boundary to the north, east and south. Towns include Ashford, Canterbury and the coastal towns of Dover, Folkestone Margate (Thanet) and Herne Bay. Much of the area is rural and includes the Romney Marsh in the south west of the county. 757,000 people live in the area.
There are significant areas of deprivation, mainly in the coastal towns of Thanet.
There are not many people from Black and minority ethnic groups living in the area, although there are some groups of people from Eastern Europe in coastal areas.
There are a higher than average number of older people living in the area and numbers are increasing.

East Kent is working hard to tackle health inequalities. Click here for more information.

Numbers of people with learning disabilities in the area?

We think that overall there are 24343 people with learning disabilities in the area.

There are 2271 people with learning disabilities known to Kent Adult Social Services.

There are 2602 people with learning disabilities on GP registers.

There are a large number of people with learning disabiliites placed in East Kent by other authorities. We don't know exactly how many but we think it is about 1500 people. This accounts for the larger number of people known to GPs than to Social Services.
