There are about 550,000 people living in Sheffield.
8% of the population are from black and minority ethnic groups.
15.5% of people are over 65 years old.
16% of people are between 15-24 age.
5.6% children are under 5.

People with learning disabilities living in the area?

There are 2205 adults aged over 20 with a learning disability living in Sheffield. Most of these adults (1982) are aged between 20 and 64.There are 223 people with learning disabilities who are over 65 years old.

Over the last 5 years, adults over the age of 20-29 have increased by 38%.
We think there will be a 27% increase in people who have complex, profound and multiple impairments over the next 10 years. We think the increase in young people aged under 19 who have other complex, profound and multiple impairments will be much more (120%)

There are 270 people over the age of 20 with severe challenging behaviour.

People from Black Minority Ethnic communities increased to 339 (11%) between 1998 and 2008. 18% of the learning disabled population aged under 18 are from black and minority ethnic groups.

The Pakistani community is the largest black and minority ethnic group in the learning disability population and has the largest proportion of people with the most severe complex and multiple impairments.

There is an increasing population of older adults (223 over 65 years) with learning disability.

The “Sheffield Caring Sharing Project” supports 299 families with carers aged over 70, 50% are in single parent households, and 45 family carers are over 80 years old.
