How many people did family doctors do special health checks for in 2009/10?

Health Meeting-2

Since 2009 GP practices in England can provide health checks for adults with learning disabilities as part of a Directed Enhanced Service scheme. Originally agreed for two years (2008-9 and 2009-10), this scheme has been extended for at least another year (2010-11). This page contains information on how many adults with learning disabilities have received a health check in 2008/9 and 2009/10 for each PCT in England.

  • In 2008/9, 27,011 people with learning disabilities were reported to have received a health check. In 2009/10, this figure increased to 58,919.
  • In 2008/9, 23% of the people reported by PCTs to have learning disabilities were reported to have received a health check. In 2009/10, this figure increased to 41%.
  • In 2009/10 the bottom 10% of PCTs provided health checks for fewer than 14% of people with learning disabilities. The top 10% of PCTs provided health checks for 67% or more of identified people with learning disabilities.

Full details are available in the report. You can see interactive maps that show what percent of people with learning disabilities received a health check for each PCT. You can download these data.
