The Department of Health collects summary data about all sorts of social care provided or organised by Local Authority Social Services Departments through the 'Referrals, Assessments and Packages of Care' (RAPs) statistics. A number of the tables of data collected cover the main reason why individuals need to receive social care; learning disabilities is one of the reasons identified.
The map linked below provides an overview of total numbers receiving social care. It has maps for numbers receiving community based services and residential care from 2005/06 to 2008/09. For the first three of these years, local authority and independent residential care are also shown separately. All the data are rates per 100,000 of the adult population, each Council with Adult Social Services Responsibility.
