How many people have learning disabilities?

Local health and social care services need to know how many people they should be providing support for.

We can estimate this from the number of people who live in each place.

About twenty people in every thousand have a learning disability. The picture below shows a thousand people. Altogether twenty of them are coloured in. This is the number who have learning disabilities.

Just under five of them are coloured darker. This is the number that local health and social services are likely to know about and be supporting. The rest are living independently with no special help.

There are more details on the next page.
