How people with learning disabilities die
We can tell a lot about the health of a group of people from how old they are when they die, and what they die from. We looked at death certificates for everyone who died in England between the years 2004 and 2008. We looked to see if their certificates said they had a learning disability or any condition that can cause it.
People with learning disabilities, or who had conditions that can cause it, died at younger ages than other people.
- They also died more commonly of some particular causes. Two causes stood out because they resulted in a strikingly large number of deaths of people with most sorts of learning disabilities and they might be preventable. They were:
- Problems caused by solids or liquids in the lungs or windpipe
- Epilepsy or convulsions
